Changes to Card Surcharges in Australia

Learn what the new card surcharge rules mean for your Studio Ninja account from 1 October 2026.

Written by Jan Santos

From 1 October 2026, Australian businesses will no longer be able to charge clients extra for paying by card.

Studio Ninja will automatically turn off Pass on surcharge for customers with an Australian Stripe account on 1 October.

At the same time, the processing fee for domestic cards will reduce to 1.65% + A$0.30 per transaction.

Do I need to do anything?

No. We’ll automatically turn off Pass on surcharge for you on 1 October.

Your Stripe connection will continue working as normal. Your clients can still pay invoices securely online, and their payments will continue to be recorded automatically in Studio Ninja.

What happens to invoices I’ve already sent?

The change depends on when your client pays, not when you sent the invoice.

If a client pays by card on or after 1 October, they will not be charged a surcharge, even if you sent the invoice before that date.

Which card payments are affected?

The change applies to:

  • Visa

  • Mastercard

  • eftpos

  • American Express

Can I adjust my prices to cover processing fees?

Yes. You can build processing costs into your overall prices instead of adding a separate card surcharge.

For example, you could increase the price of all your packages and products by 1% to 2%, regardless of how your clients choose to pay.

How you adjust your prices is up to you. If you’re unsure what is right for your business, consider speaking with an accountant or legal adviser.
